TGIF is a women’s speaker series that features quarterly meetings with thought leaders and industry experts, designed to educate, empower, and ignite creativity and possibilities for women in our community.
Each event showcases accomplished and talented women who will share their professional and deeply personal stories, along with their knowledge, expertise, and wisdom.
Our theme for Friday, December 13th is “RADICAL ACCEPTANCE, Navigating Life’s Challenges with Optimism and Humor”. This unique program features three accomplished and passionate women who have faced difficult life’s challenges and as a result, work tirelessly to improve the lives of others. With a focus on breast health, removing the stigma around mental health, and using humor as part of the “best medicine”, you will leave TGIF with new tools and strategies for living your best life.
Dr. Rachel Brem is the director of the Breast Imaging and Interventional Center at George Washington University and is the premiere voice in Cancer Care. Dr. Brem will TEACH us about the leading strategies and options in the treatment of breast cancer and how to put knowledge and power in the hands of patients.” Alison Malmon is a widely recognized professional and activist in the field of Mental Health. Her organization “Active Minds” is dedicated to changing the way we approach mental health and is the leading provider of mental health services and programs on college campuses and beyond. Alison will GIVE us tremendous insights about creating hope out of tragedy, and how
Active Minds is saving lives. And Marsha Nelms Muawwad is a seasoned Career Strategist and Executive Coach with nearly 30 years of C Suite clients and companies. In addition to her professional accomplishments, Marsha is a lifelong philanthropist who believes the best healthcare is Laughter. Marsha just launched her next chapter as a stand-up comedian and goes by the stage name Marsha Mellow. Marsha will INSPIRE us with her ability to use Humor as the best medicine in life.

DR. RACHEL F. BREM, MD, FACR, FSBI – Teach Speaker
Dr. Rachel Brem is the Director of the Breast Imaging and Interventional Center at George Washington University, where she is a Professor and Vice-Chair of Radiology, as well as the Director of the Breast Cancer Program at the GW Cancer Center. She is a co-founder and the Medical Officer of Brem Foundation, She is also the co-author of No Longer Radical: Understanding Mastectomies and Choosing the Breast Cancer Care That’s Right For You, published by Simon and Schuster.
Dr. Brem is the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including Newsweek’s Best Cancer Doctors, Castle Connolly America’s Top Doctors and America’s Top Doctors for Cancer, Best of Washington Award for Physicians and Surgeons, and JWI’s Ten Women to Watch. She is an internationally recognized expert on breast cancer as well as healthcare disparities in breast cancer. Her unique combination of clinical leadership, successful healthcare industry experience, strategy, personal experiences, and commitment to underserved communities brings value and excellence to all she undertakes.
ALISON MALMON – Give Speaker
Alison Malmon is the Founder and Executive Director of Active Minds, the nation’s largest nonprofit mobilizing youth and young adults to lead a transformative movement in mental health, forever changing how it is valued and prioritized in society.
Alison formed the organization in 2003 as a 21-year-old, following the suicide of her brother and only sibling, Brian. Wanting to end the silence that caused her brother to suffer alone and ultimately take his own life, Alison created a group on her campus at the University of Pennsylvania to promote open dialogue around mental health. Since then, Active Minds has grown into the country’s leading mental health organization for students and young adults, with a vibrant network of chapters and award-winning programs at more than 1,000 colleges and universities, K12 schools, workplaces, and communities nationwide.
Alison’s many accolades include being named Washingtonian of the Year by Washingtonian Magazine, Top Global Emerging Social Innovator by American Express, and a Person You Should Know on CNN. She’s been profiled in stories in The New York Times, Forbes, The Washington Post, Inside Higher Ed, and Glamour Magazine among others.
Alison lives in Boulder, Colorado, and is a wife and mother of three girls. In her spare time, she loves flying 23 feet in the air at the Trapeze School in Colorado.
